Day five of Paris Fashion Week, and The Fédération de la Haute Couture et de la Mode’s schedule granted us the anticipated debut collection of Sarah Burton as Givenchy creative director. The British designer spent over 25 years at Alexander McQueen, ultimately taking over from the revered designer upon his tragic passing in 2010. Subsequent to a year hiatus from the industry, Burton joined Givenchy in September 2024. Fast forward six months and the wait for Burton’s inaugural collection is over. The Central Saint Martins graduate reverted back to the original Hubert de Givenchy design ethos of cut, silhouette, and proportion. At the French fashion house’s salon on 3 Avenue Georges V, models displayed Burton’s take on archive-inspired looks – like a sharp tailored jacket reimagined from original patterns unearthed from Hubert’s archives.
Givenchy Fall 2025 Collection Review
Read below the reactions of theFashionSpot’s forum members:
“There’s no denying Sarah Burton is a great tailor but just felt like it needed more. She does love a white dress with a black belt. Still very beautiful. That compact dress is camp – I live!” [youthinasia]
“There are moments of grace interspersed with extremely unflattering silhouettes. But it’s great to have such an experienced tailor at the helm of Givenchy. I believe that she’ll grow into the position, and it’s a good match.” [Beun]
“This could pass for a collection done by the studio team. It was way below my expectations and I didn’t expect much from her. Lots of bulky garments that made models look heavy with some Alaïa by Mulier thrown in.” [Avonlea]
“Strong debut and bravo to her for doing something very different to what she was doing at McQueen. Those tailored pieces were sublime! She deserved the standing ovation.” [Frederic01]
“Overall a fabulous collection. Still her exquisite tailoring but with what feels like a more feminine touch. Bravo!” [Nomar]
“I can’t wait to see her doing couture! This show is a very strong starting point, even the bags have a lot of potential. There’s a hint of camp, but reasonably applied, there’s fantastic tailoring, there are great prints. This show made me really happy and left me wanting more.” [perhydrol]
“I find the collection surprisingly unfocused. Don’t think I have ever seen an unfocused SB collection. I was also puzzled by the obvious branding.” [Lola701]
